Should Students Be Paid to Do Well in School?

Some high school students in France will be paid in exchange for attending classes on a regular basis.

This is exactly what's happening in a pilot program in France that started this month at three vocational high schools in disadvantaged suburds of Paris. Accounts will be set up for two classes containing around $3000 apiece. If the students maintain good attendance records and reach performance targets agreed upon with their teachers, reward payments will be added to their class account. But here's the catch: students can't go and spend the money on a new iPod or an Xbox but can only use it to finance a school-related project or endeavor. Philippe Vrand, president of Public School Students group: "...We should spend this money making sure vocational students can get into the programs they want. Instead, students are being paid off ot compensate [for] their boredom." In the US more than a dozen states have started rewarding students with cash for improved test scores and enrollment in advanced-placement courses.

What do you think? A good idea or a complete waste of money? Should money play such an important role in schools?

  1. Kids should not be paid to attend and do well school because their wellness in school will help make them succeed. By doing good in school they will get good jobs that pay a lot which means they are already getting paid to do good in school.

  2. I think that a student should not be paid to go to school. A student would not be providing any contributions to society. Why would they be paid for doing nothing? A student is studying so they can be successful in life. Students that believe they should be paid are just being selfish children.

  3. I personally think students should be paid to do well in school. It would encourage them and make them persevere in academics. This is a great idea and it will allow students to have some in-school finances to expand their education in many new ways. I think it should apply to many more schools.

  4. Should students be paid to do well in school?? I think that if students were paid then in terms they would naturally do well, the worse you do in school, the less you should get paid. Also i believe attendence would increase cuz people would be more willing to come to school and get eduaction and money. I think that if i got money for being a good student and recieving good grades, then i would have a much higher chance of success.

  5. I like the idea of students getting paid for being a good student. However the only down side is that schools are paid for in taxes of Americans. So many Americans will oppose it. However the idea of getting paid for good attendance and grades is good to increase your learning.

  6. I think tit`s a very difficult issue if students should get paid for good grades. There are two kinds of studends that aren`t good at school. There are sthese, which learn and learn and get anyway bad grades. But there is still another kind - the lazy ones!! In my opinion you should pay the lazy ones if they get a good grade..it`s a great kind to motivate them and care for their future! What do you think about that? Do you get paid for a positive work?

  7. I think a good future is enough motivation to do well in school. Without a basic education lazy people will go no where in life. The people that are lazy now will be lazy later.

  8. To Lea, It is a very good idea to pay the students who are lazy because as you said it is a type of motivation. Paying them would enlighten them to do good and get good grades. But, kids who try and try and try to do good and still don't, that is a very different case. If you try and do good but your just not that smart there isn't really a purpose for getting paid to do "good".

  9. I think the motivation is good but I don't see the good in paying students who still won't do work and get paid for nothing. Other than that I think its a good idea.

  10. Once again I'm a little late in commenting but thats ok.

I agree with Lea about the lazy students getting paid. It would encourage them to attend more classes more often and do actually study and do homework. However the ones who just aren't good in school no matter what they do and if they should be paid or not is very debateable. My opinion is they should not be paid but if they were to be paid it should be because they try so hard and it would be like rewarding and appreciating them and their efforts.

  11. If the lazy students are getting paid to do their work, it is only fair if the hard-working ones get paid too. Otherwise, it will not motivate the hard-working students for what they are doing already. However, if all the students get paid, it will equally motivate all the students to their job.

  12. I actually agree with that. I think I'm changing my opinion. If any students get paid, it should be all the students and equally because if just one group of students (for example the lazy ones) get paid more then another group of students (ex. the hardworking ones) then the group who is being paid less will be less motivated and begin to not care so much. They might also feel that it isn't worth it anymore and that group would become the "lazy group" and then the school would have to start paying them more. And then a cycle would start. So, my point: pay everyone the same amount.
